Andrew Cothern Releases Deluxe Edition Of Acclaimed Book, RVA Playlist

 In News

Richmond music lovers and local history buffs have reason to celebrate this month, as music journalist and long-time advocate for the Richmond music scene Andrew Cothern has released the deluxe edition of his esteemed book, RVA Playlist: Stories from the Richmond, Virginia Music Scene. This expanded hardcover edition celebrates the second anniversary of the original, featuring new stories, an updated playlist of Richmond’s top local bands, and an even deeper dive into the vibrant music scene that Cothern has passionately supported for nearly two decades.

The Deluxe Edition of RVA Playlist takes readers on an enriched journey through Richmond’s music world, spanning from 2006 to 2016. This version includes 10 brand-new stories that cover iconic venues like the punk haven Alley Katz, memorable DIY house shows, and personal remembrances of artists who were lost too soon. Through each story, Cothern’s passionate storytelling paints a love letter to the city’s scene, inviting readers to feel the heartbeat of Richmond’s unique scene.

The book’s title is derived from Cothern’s beloved blog, which he started in 2010 to highlight the often-overlooked corners of Richmond’s local music scene. As the years passed, RVA Playlist evolved into both a personal brand for Cothern and one of Virginia’s most influential music outlets, gaining recognition far beyond the city before its conclusion in 2016. Today, Cothern remains dedicated to supporting emerging talent through an email newsletter under the same name, staying true to the ethos he built over fourteen years.

Cothern’s work with RVA Playlist has always been about more than just reviewing shows or bands; it’s about fostering a supportive and thriving community for the music and people behind it. His dedication helped lay the foundation for more comprehensive local music coverage, including this very publication. As one of Richmond’s most passionate music advocates, Cothern’s continued focus on documenting the scene serves as a tribute to the city’s distinct feel and a call to action for those working to sustain it.

Upon its original release in 2022, RVA Playlist: Stories from the Richmond, Virginia Music Scene earned impressive accolades winning the 2023 Juror’s Choice Award at the National Indie Excellence® Awards and the Silver Medal for Best Regional Non-Fiction at the 2023 Independent Publisher Book Awards. It was also named a finalist in both the 2023 Independent Author Network Book of the Year Awards and the 2024 International Book Awards.

The deluxe hardcover edition is a visual treat for both new and long-time fans, featuring a revamped cover shot designed by local photographer PJ Sykes, as well as a tactile experience that deepens with each chapter. This version is now available as a limited edition exclusive at Shelf Life Books in Richmond’s historic Carytown. To celebrate, The Auricular is offering a free signed copy to one lucky winner, with the winner to be announced on Monday, November 24th at 12 PM EST via The Auricular’s Instagram page.
