Keely Burn Wins Song & Songwriter Of The Year At 2022 VOCAL Awards
Richmond singer-songwriter Keely Burns won big at the recent 2022 VOCAL Awards, taking home both the Songwriter Of The Year Award and the Song Of The Year Award for her musical composition, “Your Company.”
Established in 1989, VOCAL, or the Virginia Organization Of Composers And Lyricists, is a not-for-profit organization based out of Richnond, VA that works hard to advance and promote songwriting and musical composition in all of Virginia. VOCAL arranges various showcases and workshops throughout the year, all of which culminate in their yearly awards. All members of VOCAL are eligible for the awards and voting comes from membership as well. Winners receive a cash prize as well as a performing slot in the monthly showcase, which took place this past Sunday, September 18th.
Keely Burn’s winning composition “Your Company” is a tender piano song that brings together a peppy melody and sweeping chorus to bring out the affecting lyrical core. It fits in tightly with songs like “Guiding Light” and “Waltz” from her 2021 album Not My Masterpiece, though with much more focus on the musical relationship between piano and voice.
