Madison Turner Returns With “Had Enough,” The Fiery Lead Single From New Album, Curtsy When You Land
While The Trial often gets the spotlight for its relevance in today’s world, it’s Franz Kafka’s other celebrated work, The Metamorphosis, that feels eerily suited to the reality capitalism has forced upon us. The rising costs, stagnant wages, pressure to produce, and constant threat of obsolescence–these forces slowly erode our sense of self until we’re left as something society views as parasitic, much like the infamous insect Gregor Samsa transforms into overnight. Even then, there’s no escape. No solution. Others are left to work harder to take care of you, while your mind drifts not to matters of humanity or societal concerns, but to the very job you’re now unable to perform. In the 110 years since The Metamorphosis was published, we’ve seen countless movements, reforms, and revolutions–both ideological and physical–and yet we remain trapped in the same cycle, waking each morning to stare at the ceiling, wondering if today is the day we look down to find pincers where our fingers once were.
It’s easy to get lost in contemplating how the world reached this point, so much so that we often need a guiding voice to remind us just how dire the situation is or push us into action. For Richmonders, the latest rallying cry comes from punk musician Madison Turner, who delivers a succinct yet galvanizing declaration that perfectly captures the moment: we’ve had enough. On her newest single, “Had Enough,” she channels the simmering resentment of relentless monotony, erupting with classic punk fervor. The statements hit like direct blasts–some more veiled in their criticism, others painfully transparent, yet all coming from a place of familiar indignation that’s palpable from the very first word. The lead single from her upcoming album, Curtsy When You Land, set to be released on Say-10 Records later this year, Turner has also accompanied the track with a video that amplifies the furious exasperation with the system in place.
The video, shot by Lisa Carter and directed by Turner herself, captures a performance in a tight, intimate space where the fired-up musician is joined by Jake Morley (bass), Ryan Clatterbuck (drums), Eva Dee Warguleski (keyboard), and AJ Baggott (guitar). The camera spins through the room, highlighting each musician as Turner delivers the vocals with fiery intensity, with each line displayed on poster boards in the background like protest signs in an ongoing strike. This visual technique enhances the song’s message, with the lyrics boldly presented on screen, amplifying Turner’s passionate, punk-infused performance. As the song builds toward its conclusion, more people filter into the room, including musician Keely Burn, whose backing vocals further reinforce the song’s call to action, deepening its universal impact.
While some lyrics subtly, almost subconsciously reflect the rise of anti-trans rhetoric in the country (“And I’m wishing I’m invisible\ Can’t have you putting your eyes on me no more”), the song maintains a strong oppositional tone in the face of late-stage capitalism. This is most evident in the second verse, where hints of protest emerge (“By now this strikes intrinsical“), along with a vivid description of a system buckling under its selfish weight (“snake sneaking up on its own tail” and “the fabric’s frayed and it’s showing wear now, let go“).
Musically, the song exudes pop-punk energy, the kind that naturally demands head-bobbing and toe-tapping. What sets it apart, however, is Turner’s unwavering conviction, which fills the space created by the invigorating rock sound. Rather than speaking down to its listeners, the message comes from a place of solidarity, delivered by someone just as entrenched in the daily grind of life as you are. This gives the song more than just the feel of an inescapable earworm; it becomes a memorable expression, one that has the potential to fuel a movement if it reaches enough people.
“Had Enough” marks Madison Turner’s first single since 2022’s “Gainesville,” while Curtsy When You Land will be her first album since 2018’s A Comprehensive Guide To Burning Out, a record that The Auricular hailed as one of the best to come out of Richmond that year. Still resonating today, the lasting impact of that album makes Turner’s upcoming release one of 2025’s most anticipated in Richmond, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the announcement of its official release date. Until then, “Had Enough” offers plenty of musical fire to fuel us through the day, helping us push forward in a system that will never strip us of our drive and spark. Like Turner incites in the song, “the fire’s eaten by the shore.” So let’s all rise the tide.
“Had Enough” is out now on all streaming platforms, including Spotify and Bandcamp. Make sure to follow Madison Turner on social media, as well as Say-10 Records, to get updates on the upcoming release of Curtsy When You Land.
