Premiere: Sophie Colette Dreams Of “Fun Again” On New Single & Video

 In News

The reverie of an old flame is hard to blow away. It’s stubborn, agonizing, and, worst of all, familiar. There is a longing comfort within those memories, faint recollections of a time when everything was just right and you felt like the best possible version of yourself. This is why an old flame can never truly be extinguished, something local pop musician Sophie Colette warmly explores in her new single “Fun Again.” It’s an ode to those daydreams that engulf us with hopeful “what ifs,” even if the reality is tense and complicated, and something that’s explored even further with its accompanying music video. Slated for an official release on Wednesday, March 29th, The Auricular is proud to premiere this sublime single and video one day early.

Over a warm piano line and a delicate groove, Colette explores this fantasy with full awareness, understanding the appeal of an easy connection and recognizing the hurdles ahead of her. (“ Why do I slide, give you all my time/ Finally see that my love was blind/ I keep on telling myself/ That you’re not the only one“). In a way, the song feels tethered to the classic Fleetwood Mac song “Dreams.” The story of a lost love envelops the listener over a relaxed beat, but whereas “Dreams” covers the immediate aftermath of a breakup, “Fun Again” floats along much later with a wiser outlook on what once was and maybe could be again.

The video, shot by C. Benji Nelson on an iPhone around Richmond, frames Colette in brief scenes from this fantasy, sharing intimate gazes and casual affection through nature hikes, record store browsing, and late-day car rides. Each scene only lasts a few seconds, showing the beauty of this vision is ultimately fleeting. It’s only strong enough to linger in our minds as an inviting daydream that focuses on that innocent, loving joy.

Co-produced with Ben Rice (Jonas Brothers, Norah Jones), “Fun Again” is the second single from Colette’s upcoming four-song EP, Kisses From Clay Street, due this May. In February, she released the uptempo track “Don’t Worry” as the first single from that new record and later released an accompanying lyric video at the beginning of March. Colette performed both songs as part of a short set earlier this month on Shockoe Sessions as part of their stunning Quatres Femmes showcase. She is returning to the stage this Friday, March 31st at Black Iris Social Club alongside IONNA, Trapcry, and Landis Wine. (You can order tickets here.)

Until that performance, you can watch the video for “Fun Again” above. For more news and updates, make sure to bookmark Sophie Colette’s website and follow her on social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook).
