Premiere: switchsystems Debut With Pensive Sound On “For Jett, the Stone Temple Pilot”

 In News

In science-fiction, the thought of being lost in deep space has always resonated with a civilization that may never encounter the situation. It’s easy to understand why the notion is so harrowing, but why do these iconic but improbable scenes in film and literature linger in our minds for so long? Why do they haunt us? Perhaps it is because most can relate with the feeling of overwhelming anxiety that can suspend you in a setting of tethered isolation, where only faint contact buzzes through as you stare into the figurative abyss.

It’s in this context where we encounter the new electronica duo switchsystems on their debut single “For Jett, The Stone Temple Pilot.” Plush and poignant, it’s a creative wonder that touches deep in the emotional core while also stretching wide into the metaphysical ether. Available to stream and purchase Friday, February 17th, The Auricular is honored to offer an exclusive stream of the song a day early, available below.

switchsystems is a collaborative project between Richmond, VA ambient artist cybercrashertv and an anonymous English electronic musician. The unnamed artist was the one who first encouraged cybercrashertv to explore music composition, which has led to some exceptional releases like Constellations and Princess that ranked among the best from Richmond in 2022. “For Jett, The Stone Temple Pilot” serves as the duo’s debut single, but also the first taste from their upcoming album entitled Last Stop Til Serenity that will be released on March 16th. Speaking to us, cybercrasherstv shared the inspiration behind the song and its familiar wordplay.

“Jett is the name of the artist who is doing the cover for the upcoming album. I called it that because many people would worship someone like him, someone who will do what their heart desires. My father, when he was a kid, wanted nothing more than to be a pilot, but he never followed that dream. He worshipped the idea of doing it, like he was in a stone temple, but he never fulfilled that dream. Often people will only worship the person for the single thing they did, like they’re trapped in stone. And also the person worshipping them will often be trapped in stone themselves, locking away their dreams, keeping themselves still, never moving. I want to show that you can do what your heart desires, as long as you have the courage to do so.”

Atmospheric and gripping, “For Jett, The Stone Temple Pilot” is an enveloping composition that brings to life the dazed perception anxiety and panic can bring. Voices sound just out of comprehension, while reality drifts along in slow motion in such a manner that blurs what’s truly happening. Utilizing whirring radio communication and a beautiful sample of the 1988 single “Love Is Stronger Than Pride” by soul artist Sade, switchsystems constructs a place here that feels too familiar in its contemplation. It’s an environment where detachment is accepted yet not sought after as we struggle to find clarity.

“For Jett, the Stone Temple Pilot” will be available to stream and purchase on Friday, February 17th through switchsystem’s Bandcamp page. You can listen to the moving track above and while you enjoy it, make sure to follow switchsystems on Instagram so you can stay up-to-date on their future releases.
