Follow Deathcat Around “Your Stupid City” In New Video

 In News

Balancing impulse and obsession is always tricky. Your inner voice screams one thing while your lips demurely say another, careful not to betray the delirium churning underneath. Love, in all its forms, is a perfect example. Whether it’s a crush, passion, or full-blown infatuation, there’s a constant urge to overcommit or overshare in the hope of forging a stronger bond. However, revealing too much too soon might actually do nothing but splinter the connection. This push and pull of the inner monologue sits at the heart of “Your Stupid City,” the newest single from Richmond trio Deathcat, which finds the band reluctantly agreeing to anything for the sake of a relationship. Paired with an accompanying music video, the track captures the precarious balancing act between whim and restraint.

A mix of punk, indie, and lo-fi with a noticeable twinge of twee, “Your Stupid City” threads the needle between C86-era richness and the irreverence of more recent bands like Girlpool and Richmond’s own Big Baby, two sounds separated by time but bound by their plucky, melodic release. “The words leave my mouth\ Before I can stop them, it’s a problem,” the song confesses, driving home its core tension: rambling divulgences that lead to overcommitments, landing you somewhere you never intended to be (“Maybe you think you could forget me\ Without you I feel so shitty\ I would follow you anywhere\ Even your stupid city“). The band, comprised of Caroline Gunn, Gaby Davenport, and Josh Akerly, delivers the message with endearing charm, deftly balancing its playful energy and undercurrent of longing within the cleverly written song.

Shot and edited by Ella Weaver, the video captures the band in grainy clarity as they wander around the very region they lament, singing and strumming in a field, the bed of a pick-up truck, and the dingy apartment referenced in the song’s lyrics. Shots shift between detached gazes, dulled by the regional malaise at the heart of this droll love song, and fleeting moments of levity, stray smiles in the truck bed followed by a quick game of patty cake to pass the time. With the feel of a VHS-era alt-rock relic flickering on a cracked CRT, the video channels the song’s timeless daze, a familiar sentiment driven by sharp electric guitar, a buoyant rhythm, and hooky, melodic vocals.

“Your Stupid City” is the first single from Deathcat since the release of the Deathcat Demos in August 2024, which contained the songs “better than u” and “i do not wanna bite,” the latter of which also appeared on the loaded Sockhead Records compilation SHRF Vol. 2 the following September. “Your Stupid City” is the precursor to the band’s upcoming EP, due out later this spring. They’ve earned their stripes on Richmond stages over the last year and a half, and while we’re counting down to the EP, “Your Stupid City” is here to hold us over, and it’s worth playing on repeat.
