Aura Menace The Trapmetal Scene With “What’s Up?”
Thrashing bangers are what local trapmetal moshers Aura are known for, but they’ve upped their game on their newest single, “What’s Up?”, released this past February. A song off their new six-track EP Roku Ronin, the track is an easy introduction to the band’s pummeling sound with thundering verses that lead into an irresistible chorus, all of which is on full chaotic display in their new video.
Shot by Travis Ilapit, the video provides a roaming view into the disorienting effect of Aura’s music. Camera shots tilt and dart around the band’s mauling performance of “What’s Up,” adding some depth to the track’s guttural charm, which comes into complete focus as the chorus hits. “What’s up” the band roars in unison at the start of the chorus, an infectious hook that could convert any music fan not already versed in the madcap appeal of trapmetal.
Since first putting out their debut album Roots in 2021, Aura has kept busy with thrashing singles each year that advance their musical malaise. In 2022, the band released three singles in total, two of which (“Zombie” and “Oz”) made their way onto the new Roku Ronin EP. With that release out for everyone to devour, the hard-hitting sextet is keeping their foot on the gas with several high-profile shows this spring and more to come in 2023.
