Hope Morgan Displays Stirring Americana On “Thinning”
Singer-songwriter Hope Morgan packs quite the musical punch. On her new single, “Thinning,” you may not feel her imposing force right away, but by the end of the last word and the last note, you’ll be left reeling from the emotive power she brings to the table. On display in a new music video, this track is a pure gem that you need to go out of your way to experience.
Evoking the wistful depths of Americana, “Thinning” offers a triumvirate of resonance: poignant music, pensive lyricism, and profound vocals. As a forlorn guitar strum is matched with solemn strings, Morgan relays her journey through heartbreak. “I don’t wanna serve addiction / But I wanna be in love / Oh, so this is the end / But at the same time it’s not,” she sings, offering a tinge of aspiration at the end. Most memorable though is the opening of the chorus where Morgan beautifully depicts the on-going struggle with heartbreak and why it can linger so long. “There’s pockets of air where I feel okay / And there’s moments when I cannot breathe” she relates. Even though we know the first side will eventually overtake the second, it doesn’t make the current reality any easier, which this song so gracefully illustrates.
Filmed by Daniel Bagbey and directed by Colin & Caroline Healy, the music video for “Thinning” rises to the occasion of such an earnest composition. Morgan is compelling in her performance here, but more gripping are the brief reflections of a relationship doomed, shots that mirror those moments where we know the end is coming but wonder how we can stave it off for just a little while longer. Also included are gorgeous flashes of an upright bass performance from Ayça Kartari which only add to the sonority of the song and video.
“Thinning” marks the first single from Hope Morgan in 2023. She previously released a joint single in 2021 alongside Colin & Caroline Healy, where the trio covered the 2015 Lord Huron track “The Night We Met” and offered the first glimpse of Hope Morgan’s artistry. That artistry is fully displayed on “Thinning” and it’s what establishes Hope Morgan as a truly impressive singer-songwriter, one we are definitely keeping our ear on for the near future.
