Ko’Kane Stompin’ & Luh Guttah Lay It Out Direct In “Been Better”
Can we retire platitudes like “I’m good, you?” or “I’m doing okay” when someone asks how things are going? Instead, why not try something more honest, like “I’ve been better,” a simple, straightforward acknowledgment that things are tough without needing a dramatic tone. That sentiment is at the heart of “Been Better,” the new single from Richmond MCs Ko’Kane Stompin’ & Luh Guttah, recently released alongside a music video.
Shot by Rick Blair, the video places the duo in a pseudo-conversation, each introducing their verse by answering the question, “How you been?” A flood of thoughts pour out from both artists, weaving seamlessly in and out of rhythm as they unpack the highs and lows shaping their recent days. Set against a pensive piano line and a clacking beat, the track carries a contemplative tone, yet Ko’Kane Stompin’ and Luh Guttah keep the energy grounded. Their delivery remains raw and unfiltered; never weighed down, never forced–just an honest reflection that feels direct and real.
“Been Better” follows “GBOE” as one of Luh Guttah’s recent singles, both arriving in the wake of his 2024 release “Get Em.” For Ko’Kane Stompin’, this marks his first single since “We Gone See,” which dropped in mid-2024–a year that also saw the release of his album StompDada. That project featured a previous link-up between the two on track three, “Back On Bs.” Their creative partnership stretches back even further, with their first collaboration closing out Ko’Kane’s 2022 album Retribution in style. As their individual paths continue to unfold, their artistic intersection remains an exciting space, one that thrives on natural chemistry and a shared vision, coming together when the moment calls for it.
