Piranha Rama Erupt On “Time Being” In New Hourglass Sessions

 In News

The team behind Hourglass Sessions just don’t miss. On their latest video released on Valentine’s Day, they’ve captured a particularly blistering performance of “Time Being” by local collective Piranha Rama that feels notable not just for its sheer force, but also for showcasing some essential figures in the history of Richmond music.

Colorful and precise, the video flaunts the musical reach of Piranha Rama and their fully polished garage rock sound. From the opening moment until the last, “Time Being” is a harmonic roar coming from grainy electric guitars and warm brass instruments. At the center of this melodic clamor is Chrissie Lozano offering pulsating bass notes and a punchy voice. Behind her, the band locks in musical step with a driving sound that only lets up once the percussion delivers its final hammer. It’s music that will envelope you with its talent as well as its infectious joy that the Hourglass folks have so dutifully captured on film.

“Time Being” is the closing track on Piranha Rama’s 2022 album Omniscient Cloud Cover, which was just announced as part of the 2023 Short List of albums under consideration for the Newlin Music Prize. The band previously released music videos for four songs off the record as well: “Placate,” “Golden Blues,” “A Door,” and “Gold In The Sand.”

Music aside, this video feels like a tribute of sorts to the local scene. Filmed at fabled studio space The Virginia Moonwalker, the camera makes sure to pan across each of the players in Piranha Rama, all of whom have made indelible contributions to Richmond’s musical catalog over the years. Bob Miller, Brandon Simmons, Chrissie Lozano, Gordon Jones, John Sizemore, Nat Quick, Reggie Pace, Russell Lacy, Tim Falen — every last one of those names has made amazing contributions to the scene. Just Google any of them and you’ll learn about a different chapter of local music.
