Piranha Rama Melodically Mine For “Gold In The Sand”
At the end of September, Richmond’s favorite supergroup Piranha Rama dropped the sublime new record Omniscient Cloud Cover via Brokers Tip Records. Deeply soulful and charming, it’s easily one of the highlights from the local music scene in 2022 and the band immediately followed the release up with some big moves, first by putting on an unforgettable album release party at Fuzzy Cactus this past Wednesday and then by hitting the road with a four-date engagement opening up for alternative legends Pavement in Atlanta and Austin. But that wasn’t all the band had in store for us as they returned to the gold mine of their new record to release a new music video this past Friday for the dusty, enticing track “Gold In The Sand.”
With a melody that lingers like the blazing sun over a fruitful desert, “Gold In The Sand” captures the lonesome beauty of what we associate with the classic era of Basin and Range exploration. The video, put together by Limp Wrist Puppetry, hones in on the track’s arid sound with shots of a gold miner toiling away under the hot sun while panning for gold in a winding river. The creative visuals here enhance the vivid imagery and helps the song’s escalating climax strike at an even deeper resonance.
“Gold In The Sand” is the fourth music video to come off of Omniscient Cloud Cover, after “A Door” (link) and “Golden Blues” (link) in September and “Placate” (link) in August. Each song reveals a bit more about the wonder found within their new record, though still holding back on some of the record’s best surprises. (Spoiler: track 8 is a true banger.)
