Premiere: Weird Sister Rebels Against Societal Restraint In “Dreamthievers”

 In News

Life is full of commercialized dreams and societal constraints. What we need and desire always seems just out of reach no matter how hard we try, something that feels intentional and systematic. The pursuit of our dreams and aspirations is a relentless uphill battle, riddled with norms and expectations from a culture that benefits from that constant striving. It doesn’t take long for disillusionment to set in with this arrangement. We find ourselves questioning the very essence of our existence, a quandary that will lead to anguish and rage, often at the same time. Zero in on that irritated cross-section and you’ll find post-hardcore artist Weird Sister on their latest single, “Dreamthievers,” a vivid overview of this morose reality. A seething yet surging track, it’s a powerful rallying cry of opposition against the suffocating norms and illusory dreams that plague our lives. Out everywhere on Friday, July 28th, The Auricular is excited to premiere this song today with an exclusive stream below as well as further insight into the indignation swirling within music and lyrics.

A union of noisy hardcore, hazy shoegaze, and ample post-rock, “Dreamthievers” is a bold musical statement that weaves together a tapestry of emotions and themes alongside complimentary sounds and tones. The lavish haze of shoegaze represents those out-of-reach dreams, while the thundering rhythm section points to the never-ending grind that we find ourselves trapped in while pursuing our wishes. Vocals move through both soundscapes, crooning at first as an invitation to break the cycle before resorting to bellows and howls in order to release the festering rage inside. Cathartic to its core, it’s a forceful and unapologetic release of pent-up emotions, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in a visceral experience of self-discovery and rebellion.

Weird Sister is a musical project led by Dylan Lawson, a gifted artist well-versed in the complexities of heavy and progressive genres. Lawson’s primary output has been with the band Asylum 213, dating back to the mid-2010s, but he has also performed alongside Dismantle The Architect, Charger Port, and Can’t Help Myself, to name just a few. Weird Sister as a project dates back to 2018 as a way for Lawson to tinker around with various sounds and styles in order to land upon a fresh sound that also stayed true to his core musical expression. In 2022, he released a four-song EP, Everything’s Funeral, and a stand-alone single, “Ward Bonding,” under the Weird Sister. “Dreamthievers” builds upon the misty rage of those releases with even more nuance and clarity, zeroing in on a specific notion that causes so much strife and turmoil within our lives.

“As much individuality and freedom as our society has, we are consistently restrained or labored to a point of vulnerability and submission,” Lawson described. “That renders us cynical wage slaves unable to define ourselves through the otherwise beautiful life we have (or would have) of love, family, sentimental experiences, and just appreciating the world around us, because of how the neglect and misery of a mundane life we’re essentially forced into preventing it. We wind up stealing from each other, just as we have been stolen from, merely to gain some semblance of what it means to be alive, even if only for a second, and in the worst sense possible.”

“Dreamthievers” is the first single from the upcoming record Nothing Like It Was, which will be Weird Sister’s debut full-length album. The album will certainly feature more soul-stirring narratives and evocative soundscapes like its lead single, but until that time, Dylan Lawson has given us more than enough to wrap our ears and minds around with “Dreamthievers,” a song that exemplifies the artistic vision and emotional depth of Weird Sister.

“Dreamthievers” is scheduled to be released on Friday, July 28th, through Spotify, Bandcamp, and other dedicated streaming platforms. To keep up-to-date on Weird Sister, make sure to follow them on Instagram.
