Scene Recap: Ignited, cybercrasherstv, Roscoe Burnems

 In News

There’s a ton of great outlets, organizations, and individuals covering the music scene in Richmond. So many that it might be hard to keep up to date on all of them. We’ll try and collect some great articles, coverage, and news bits we’ve read each week here at The Auricular.

Hey! It’s Bandcamp Friday! Go check out our list of over 1,200 Richmond musicians and find something local & cool to purchase today. All proceeds go straight to the artist! (Bandcamp list link here.)

Hey again! We relaunched our release page this week for 2023! Check it out and make sure to let us know if we’re missing any 2023 releases from the list. Singles, EPs, LPs — anything you got, let us know! (Release page link here.)

Maggie Graff from Ignited got profiled by Sydney Lake for Style Weekly in this wonderful article from last Friday. It literally published as we were finishing up last week’s scene recap, otherwise it would have been the top thing to check out last week. Oh well. Check it out now! (Article link here.)

Why, is that local powerhouse Deau Eyes making NPR‘s list of Slingshot Artists To Watch? I do believe it is! Huge shout-out to Desiré Moses from WNRN for including her on the list! (Article link here.)

Peter McElhinney over at Style Weekly wrote this really good piece about The Mingus Awareness Project ALS Benefit which takes place this Sunday. (Article link here.)

Davy Jones at Style Weekly chatted with Isaac Gibson from Virginia band 49 Winchester in this fun piece. (Article link here.)

Sandra Shelley over at Richmond Magazine told the story of Roscoe Burnems, the first Richmond Poet Laureate. Not music per se, but Roscoe has definitely helped support and cultivate the local music scene in town over the years. (Article link here.)

People love a good newsletter these days so here’s two ones you should definitely be subscribed to: Tracy Wilson’s Turntable Report (link here) and Andrew Cothern’s RVA Playlist (link here).

Make sure to check out Commonwealth Concert Opera on Shockoe Sessions Live! from this past Tuesday so you can feel extra fancy and cultured. Seriously though, “Tacea le note” was just fantastic to hear. Next up on Shockoe Sessions: Hotspit! (YouTube link here.)

Our Richmond Music Roundup will return next week, but in the meantime, make sure you’re checking out HearRVA and their curated Friday lists of new releases. It’s one of the best places to keep up-to-date on new local music! (Instagram link here.)

Tons of great concerts coming up this weekend and the diligent RestlessRVA team will have a nice schedule to post over on their Instagram so make sure to follow that. (Instagram link here.) For a curated list of the whole week, the sensational Marilyn Drew Necci has her detailed show column available here at The Auricular each and every Wednesday so don’t miss that! I normally close this column/blurb/whatever with a local song and since it’s Bandcamp Friday, I’ve got more than enough choices, right? Well, I thought I’d make it simple. Just click on our randomized Bandcamp list (link here.) and select a song from whoever came up first. Doing that did give me a great artist: the enigmatic ambient musician cybercrasherstv. But choosing a singular song from their catalog was not going to be easy. I landed on a record of theirs to narrow my search fairly simply since I was a big fan of the Constellations album from this past September. But what song? Do I put down the lengthy but amazing “Castor / Pollux?” Or do I go with a brief track like “Monoceros” to give everyone a taste? Then I realized I was spending way too much time deciding when I could just plop the album down below so that’s what I’m going to do. Here is a really intriguing ambient record that cybercrasherstv has labelled as “space orchestral.” It’s calming. It’s invigorating. It’s enthralling. And it’s listed as “Name Your Price” right now on Bandcamp. Why don’t you give it a listen below and throw some dollars their way afterwards? Bandcamp won’t take a cut of your money today so it’s the perfect time to pick up a true musical wonder. Enjoy Constellations by cybercrasherstv!
