Weekend Plans Dazzle With Impassioned Fusion On “So Low”
Eight-piece band Weekend Plans has been a winning part of Richmond’s music scene for years now, most notably adding to the city’s rich discography with their 2019 album State Of Nine. A few singles have followed since then and in 2023, the band looks poised to release their sophomore album that will certainly grow their captivating brand of sonic fusion. Before that though, the band recently unveiled a new composition, the affective and expressive groove “So Low,” which the octet also submitted as an entry for NPR’s Tiny Desk series.
Brimming with emotion, creativity, and pure musical expertise, “So Low” showcases everything Weekend Plans does well, offering a simmering blend of funky hip-hop, soulful R&B, and crafty jazz. Playful flourishes and sentimental harmonies ring out from each instrument, creating an expressive soundscape that houses some conflicting emotions. Over the smooth groove, lead singer (and band leader) Kayen Wilborn trades bars with resident MC Logos The Poetic as they both deconstruct an unbalanced relationship that leads to neglect and scorn, with Logos honing in on the angsty ennui while Wilborn delivers the vulnerable verdict.
Shot by Justin Ott, the video finds the band surrounding the titular tiny desk while locked into the captivating medley. Even when not playing, you can view them moving along to the beat, getting more animated as the Logos picks up steam with his flow before Wilborn cools it all down with poignant scolding. As you’d expect from a band utilizing so many influences and visions, the song has plenty of twists and turns despite its smooth roll-out, with an inviting intro and resonant bridge section serving as illuminating guideposts on this enthralling musical trek. Fantastic all around, it’s definitely whetting our appetite for more new music from the band. Fingers crossed it comes sooner than later!
